South American Corn Production on Different Paths

Corn production in South America’s two major agricultural countries will follow two distinct paths during the 2024-2025 crop season.

In Brazil, the planted acreage is expected to remain steady, but exports are likely to drop significantly due to intensified competition in the international markets. CONAB has increased its estimate for Brazil’s total corn crop to 4.717 million bushels, a 3.6 percent increase from last year. If achieved, this would mark the second-largest harvest in Brazil’s history, trailing only the record in 2022-2023. Field activities are underway for Brazil’s first corn crop.

In contrast, Argentina anticipates the largest relative decrease in corn acreage in 17 years, driven by concerns about the potential impact of corn stunt disease, which affected many producers’ yields last season. Farmdoc says Argentina’s corn exports are projected to reach their highest levels since the 2020-2021 season. Argentina’s corn planted area is projected to drop 25 percent.
